Cancer support and education services
We offer direct access to nutritional, social and spiritual services as you go through cancer treatment. Additionally, you may participate in our rehabilitation program that includes therapy for lymphedema, a common side effect of cancer treatment.
We also offer access to our education room, where you can learn about the latest information and advancements in cancer treatment. Our hospital partners with the American Cancer Society and other organizations so you can participate in programs such as Look Good, Feel Better.
Genetic counseling and cancer risk assessments
Hereditary cancer risk assessments and counseling are available if you have concerns about your personal or family history of cancer. We will provide you with information regarding your genetic predisposition to cancer, cancer risk and options for cancer screening and prevention.
These services are provided by an experienced, board-certified genetic counselor. Genetic counseling appointments are one hour, conducted by telephone and coordinated through The Cancer Center. Risk factors for possible hereditary cancer can include:
- 10 or more cumulative colon polyps in the same person
- Aggressive or metastatic prostate cancer at any age
- Breast or ovarian cancer in a family, especially those with Jewish ancestry
- Cancer before 50 years old
- Colorectal cancer with high microsatellite instability (MSI) or immunohistochemistry (IHC) abnormal
- Pancreatic, diffuse gastric or renal cancer diagnosed before 50 years old
- Family member with a known genetic variant
- Having more than one primary cancer
- Invasive ovarian cancer
- Male breast cancer
- Medullary thyroid or adrenocortical cancer
- Melanoma diagnosed before 40 years old or in multiple members on the same side of the family
- Multiple family members with the same type of cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Rare or unusual tumors or physical findings, especially at a young age
- Triple negative breast cancer before you are 60 years old Unusual clustering of cancers in a family
