Expecting parents, Mari and Ryan Sweeney, were told early on there was a high probability that their twins would be born prematurely. Even with the advanced notice, it was nonetheless frightening when they were advised to deliver the twins at just 32 weeks. The twins were developing at very different rates and it would be best to monitor them closely after delivery. It was a whirlwind. After seeing a specialist here at RCH, Friday, November 8, their twin boys were born the following Monday, on November 11th, 2019! “It was hard because they told us we could keep them in and try to wait and see if they’re still growing. Or we could deliver. We just decided let’s deliver early, which we think was the right choice looking back. We feel like the nurses did a really good job of explaining the whole process and what was going to happen. It helped a lot, but was still nerve-wracking. They made a very stressful experience become a lot more tolerable. We live 45 minutes away and in the beginning, it was very stressful, but they told us to never hesitate to call and get updates. We know they were in great hands. As a group, just this whole NICU experience, everyone has been great. Even nurses that we haven’t spoken to or haven’t been assigned to the boys came up to us. We feel like everyone knows who the Sweeney twins are and support us when they’re progressing. The doctor, the charge nurses, Rachel, Jenny, Raymond, Connie, Carol, really everyone’s been so reassuring.”
